NOT OPENING IN 2022
As neat as a new pin, Kevin and Ber O’Donnell’s delightfully situated farmhouse is on a former dairy farm, surrounded by three mountain ranges - the Comeraghs, the Knockmealdowns and the Galtees - and close to the rivers Suir and Tar, making it an ideal base for walking and fishing holidays.
Trout fishing on the Suir and Tar on the farm is free (hut provided for tying flies, storing equipment and drying waders) and Kevin, who is trained in mountain skills, leads walking groups.
The house is over 200 years old (the O'Donnell family has lived and farmed here for six generations), but it is well restored to combine old furniture with modern comforts; the bedrooms are not especially big, but they are thoughtfully furnished (including tea/coffee facilities and iron/trouser press) and, like the rest of the house, immaculate. The adjacent River Cottage, where pets are permitted, is available for self catering.
There’s a great welcome and guests feel at home immediately.
Breakfast are delicious, with stewed fruits from the garden and home-made breads and preserves as well as lovely porridge or the ‘full Irish’. Dinner is not offered but Ber can direct guests to the most suitable restaurant for their needs.
Genuinely hospitable hosts, homely comforts - including a log fire to relax beside and a large, well-maintained garden, where guests can enjoy the peaceful setting - all add up to a real country break. And, if some local culture is also on the agenda, nearby attractions include the Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle and the Swiss Cottage.
Courses on diverse subjects including including gardening, art & craft, and beekeeping are offered, and it's a good overnight stop for pilgrims walking St Declan's Way (Ardmore, Co Waterford to the Rock of Cashel).
