Magees Bistro

With a good atmosphere, good simple cooking and good value it’s not hard to see why this restaurant is so popular
Opening hours: D daily:Mon-Fri 6-10, Sat 6-11, Sun 5-10. abbreviations

Right in the heart of Carlingford village, just across the road from O’Hare’s pub, this lively restaurant is a first choice for many coming to Carlingford.

Its ancient walls with castle windows are a part of the old Heritage Town, and the interior is divided into two informal sections with plain wooden tables and chairs, with candlelight adding to the atmosphere.

Most tables have views looking into the busy kitchen, and there’s a small bar where you can wait for your table if it is not ready - try one of their speciality cocktails and you won't even notice the wait...

A varied bistro menu includes some unusual choices - frogs legs perhaps, deep fried with herb butter - alongside popular dishes like cajun chicken Caesar. Beef and lamb come from local farms in the Cooley peninsula, and main course favourites include a 10oz sirloin steak, chicken supreme and surf & turf, also a lot of local seafood including fresh lobster (which is fairly priced), a grilled seafood platter and various fresh fish of the day specials all served with baby potatoes and al dente vegetables.

Classic desserts to finish - sticky toffee pudding and crème brulée (with fruit compote and shortbread biscuit) are typical. Well priced wine list, also some draught beers.

With a good atmosphere, good simple cooking and good value it’s easy to see why this restaurant is so popular - and if you don't feel like a full meal, why not just drop into Magees Lounge for a drink (choice includes wine on draught...) and a small plate?
