Set romantically in its own parkland valley overlooking Clifden and the sea, Abbeyglen is family-owned and run in a very hands-on fashion by Paul and Brian Hughes.
It’s a place that has won a lot of friends over the years and it’s easy to see why: from the minute arriving guests meet Gilbert the parrot at reception, it’s clear that this place is different; it’s big and comfortable and laid-back - and there’s a charming generosity of spirit about the place.
Complimentary afternoon tea for residents is a particularly hospitable speciality, served in a spacious drawing room or in front of an open peat fire in the relaxing bar, where many a late night is spent.
A major building programme saw the addition of six new superior rooms, and the refurbishment of the existing bedrooms, which are all unusually spacious and have character.
Most recently, a beauty and relaxation centre has been added, and the outdoor swimming pool that was a feature in the garden at the front of the hotel for many years has been re-designed - as a fountain and sun patio.
