Situated in the heart of one of Ireland’s furthest flung towns, and one almost surrounded by the sea, the Talbot family’s friendly An Chéibh (“the anchor”) is a very fitting place to find local seafood in a comfortable bar and lounge adorned with nautical memoribilia and local photos of bygone times.
Although there’s plenty of choice for non-fish eaters, menus are weighted heavily in favour of local seafood, as is the Specials Board, offering seasonal fish such as mackerel or salmon - and their Fishermans Platter should satisfy the hungriest traveller.
There was a change of chef and we felt that the cooking style had become a little fussy; however, this remains a warm and welcoming place and we will certainly go back, hoping to find the simple cooking and directness of flavour and freshness that we have previously enjoyed here.
There are special set menus on two days in the year Fair Day (15 Aug) and Heritage Day (tbc).
Seats about 40; food served Mon-Sat, 12.30-9pm in summer, to 8pm in winter, Sun 12.30-7.30pm; à la carte; house wine about €17.50. Children welcome; air conditioning. Closed Good Fri, 25 Dec. MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
