The wonderfully atmospheric gallery Andersons at Highlanes is right in the centre of Drogheda and it is well worth allowing an hour or two for a visit, and planning to have a bite at the café while you’re here.
Aside from work exhibited, the building itself – a Franciscan church gifted to the people of Drogheda in 2000 and insightfully converted to allow light and contemporary space while highlighting its history - is inspirational.
And guilt-free retail therapy is offered too, as designer network Louth Craft Mark have a beautiful shop here, where an extensive range of highly desirable gifts are displayed. (Some are also available online.)
The café, which is a sister of the excellent Andersons Food Hall and Café in Glasnevin and the Andersons Crêperie in Drumcondra (both in Dublin 9, see entries), is in a bright and airy annexe incorporating the old stone walls of the church and linking the craft shop and gallery space.
Modern lightwood panelling separates a small open kitchen from an uncluttered dining area set up with some style for the comfortable enjoyment of the quality casual fare that is synonymous with Andersons.
You’ll find the charcuterie, fish and cheese platters that earned their reputation in Glasnevin, served with artisan chutneys and relishes; delicious breads and pastries; an extensive selection of sandwiches of all types; daily specials and a good choice of wines, lemonades, speciality teas and delicious Illy coffee.
Seats 52. Open Mon-Sat 10.30am-5pm. House wine €18.95. Children welcome (high chair, childrens menu, baby changing facilities); toilets wheelchair accessible; free broadband wi/fi. Closed 25-26 Dec; 31 Dec, 1 Jan. MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
