Ballyrobin Country House
Literally two minutes drive from Belfast International airport’s terminal building and nestled between fields of barley, this lovingly restored 200 year old country house makes a welcome haven for travellers who will find good realistically priced food (open to non residents), or a bed for the night in one of the four individually themed ensuite bedrooms.
Built from local field stones, “The Ballyrobin”, as it is affectionately called, has old fashioned charm, with a turf fire, household memorabilia everywhere, and nooks and crannies for intimate dining in cosy surroundings.
The menu, too, has been carefully chosen to match the atmosphere: you could travel a long way before finding a starter as interesting and flavoursome as their asparagus, poached duck egg and crispy Fermanagh streaky bacon with hollandaise.
Local Dundrum crab is popular – in, for example, the intriguingly named ‘Crab, Crab, Crab’; alternatively, if you are looking for something simple, try the soda stack with rare breed pork sausages, free range egg and brown sauce.
Reasonably priced wines are offered to match the menu, and service is casual and friendly as would be expected in the relaxed atmosphere of this amiable property.
Restaurant open daily: B 7-12 (Open to non residents); Mon - Sat 12-9pm (to 10pm Fri & Sat); Sun 12-8.30pm. MasterCard, Visa, Switch.
