Ballywarren Country House
Diane and David Skelton’s hospitable country house is in a pleasant rural area of gentle farming countryside just a few minutes’ drive east of Cong and Ashford Castle.
Large and well-proportioned, it has a welcoming feeling from the minute you arrive through the door into the classic back and white tiled hall.
Public rooms are furnished stylishly and include a spacious drawing room with a cosy open fire, and the lovely Garden Room dining room, where dinner is available to guests by arrangement - like a dinner party, it’s a wholesome 5-course meal based on seasonal local ingredients, organic where possible, and all bread and rolls are home-made; a short but surprising wine list includes a choice of five bubblies.
An oak staircase leads up to the three charming bedrooms, all with luxurious, well-finished bathrooms.
This would make a very comfortable base for a few days spent in the area; the only slight downside is that the road is rather close, although it is not busy at night.
Rooms 3 (all en-suite & no smoking); children over 14 and small babies welcome (under 1s free in parents' room, cot available free of charge); all-day room service; B&B €74pps, ss €50. Pets permitted in certain areas by prior arrangement. Residents' D at 8pm in the Garden Room; dining room seats 8; set D €42 (4 course); reservation required and should be ordered earlier in the day. House wine €16; No SC. Fishing, golf, lake cruising, horse riding, hill walking all nearby. Garden. Closed 1 week May, 1 week Oct. Amex, MasterCard, Visa
