Bangkok 93 - A Taste of Thailand

Cork city's longest established restaurant specialising in Thai cuisine, Mary Anne and Jim Ryan's restaurant started off in 1993 as 'A Taste of Thailand' and soon earned a loyal following that kept it busy all the time. After a major refurbishment, they re-opened with a new name too, hence Bangkok 93 - A Taste of Thailand.

Jim trained in Thailand and Australia, and freshness and authenticity are the key words here: everything is cooked to order with no artificial colours, flavours or additives used, and fresh ingredients are all Irish, except for exotics, and mainly come from the English Market.

Many dishes are offered with a number of variations, including vegetarian options, but other special dietary requirements (vegan, diabetic etc) can also be catered for.

Menus are quite extensive but organised in a user-friendly way by style - curry, grills and stir-fries, noodles and so on - and, for the undecided, there are a couple of the familiar banquet meals, offering a balanced selection of dishes on each course for groups of four or six.

House specialities include traditional Thai curries, Thai beef salad and Pad Thai noodles, but the range offered is wide and some European dishes are offered too.

Everything is made to order (mild, medium or hot to suit personal preference, or giving you 'fresh chillies on the side' so you can adjust your own meal to taste), and good food, service and value explain this restaurant's enduring popularity.

The wine list offers a balanced choice of world wines, including some half and quarter bottles, also beers including Singha and Tiger.

Seats 60 (private room, 8); children welcome (high chair); air conditioning. D only Mon-Sun, 5-11pm (to 10.30pm Sun); Early D about €25 (6-7 pm); Set menus ('banquets') for min. 4 persons from about €30, otherwise à la carte. House wine from about €22 (beers, including Thai beers, available). Closed 24-26 Dec. MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
