Blakes of the Hollow (Café Merlot / Restaurant Number 6)

One of the great classic pubs of Ireland, Blakes has been in the same family since 1887 and, up to recently, was always one of the few places that could be relied upon to be unchanged. Not a food place, a pub; maybe a sandwich, but mainly somewhere to have a pint and put the world to rights.

The original Victorian front bar still remains untouched after 120 years, but relatively recent changes elsewhere in this historic establishment include the addition of the Café Merlot (serving reliable informal, bistro-style food) on the lower ground floor, and The Atrium, a gothic style bar spread over two floors.

And, right up at the top of the house, there is an elegantly appointed fine dining restaurant, Number 6, which brings together the talents of two personalities well known in the hospitality of the area, head chef Gerry Russell and front of house manager Johnny Donnelly.

As a team they present ambitious cooking, a relaxed fine dining atmosphere and caring, knowledgeable service with all the little extra that gives guests that pampered feeling all of add which adds up to something very special.

Wine is Johnny Donnelly’s passion, and this is reflected in both an interesting list, and interested guidance and service; Wine & Food evenings are held regularly, and always a sell-out; otherwise Number 6 is open on Friday & Saturday nights when there is enough demand.

Otherwise diners are directed to Café Merlot, which is very popular, not least at lunch time and for their pre-theatre menu (from 5.30 Mon-Sat), which is good value at £14.95 for two course; a Saturday night Blues and Jazz disco is also a great hit.
