Brasserie Sixty6
Although it has a narrow street frontage this is a large restaurant, high-celinged and extending way back into an old building - and the stylish deli next door is also part of it. Décor is unfussy modern, for the most part wooden floors, simple bare-topped tables and leather 'bus seat' banquettes or chairs that would look at home in a country kitchen.
Aside from a very large chandelier and some unusual artwork, the main decorative theme is a whole wall of mismatched plates, echoing the traditional kitchen dresser, a good idea that lends warmth and informality; it adds up to a comfortably stylish setting for menus that are strong on house specialities and offer something different from the standard fare.
Starters include a crisp and tasty house rendition of deep-fried squid and there may also be unusual dishes such as marrowbone with toasted brioche, while the signature main course is rotisserie chicken served with corn on the cob, coleslaw and cornbread or mash another good retro idea, using top notch chicken that is cooked with a different marinade each day.
Good steaks come with proper homemade chips, there are several versions of bangers and mash, or you might go mad with lobster, or even whole suckling pig for a group, on occasion
Service is pleasant and helpful (although it can be disorganised), and you can also expect updated classic desserts, good coffee, a short but well-chosen wine list (plus beers, cocktails and freshly squeezed juices), plus a bill that won't break the bank.
Toilets wheelchair accessible; air conditioning; children welcome; open all day 8am-11.30pm (from 10am Sat & Sun), L 12-5, D 5-11.30, set L €14.95, also a la carte; house wine €19.50; SC 12.5% on groups 6+. Closed 25-26 Dec, 1 Jan, Good Fri. Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
