Cairbre House

Brian Wickham’s fine old house is just across the bridge from Dungarvan town centre - it is of great historical interest, and set in wonderful gardens, right on the water.

The house has a homely feel with lots of local information, and a lovely all-year conservatory with views over the gardens and harbour.

The traditionally furnished bedrooms are spacious and comfortable, with beautiful views out over the water; they include rooms for families or groups and, as well as en-suite facilities, there’s an extra communal bathroom with a full bath for anyone who prefers it to a shower.

Old houses can be difficult to upgrade, but Brian is well up to the challenge and every year sees a number of ingeniously executed small improvements which make a big difference to guest comfort (by enlarging bathrooms a little, and reorganising their amenities, for example).

Recently redecorated bedrooms are bright and cheerful with fashionable large-pattern wallpaper and new soft furnishings, and the owner's space is now separate - allowing for a comfortable sitting room with an open fire, exclusively for guests' use.

Breakfast is a high point - and includes a hot vegetarian special, with the option of bacon for non-vegetarians! In fine weather, Brian is happy to serve breakfast in the back garden, where there are some wooden tables and benches. Otherwise, it's served in a pleasant room handsomely set up with Stephen Pearse pottery - and overlooking Brian's extensive bird-feeding stations, which should ensure an entertaining start to the day.

The gardens, which enjoy a micro-climate that allows many ‘impossible’ plants to survive here, are Brian’s greatest love and a source of great pleasure to guests.

A special place to stay.

Rooms 4 (all shower only, 3 en-suite, 1 with private bathroom, 1 family, all no smoking, 1 single, 1 ground floor); B&B €40-50 pps, single €50. Children welcome (under 4s free in parents' room, cot available free of charge); free broadband wi/fi. Garden visits, golf and sea angling nearby. Closed mid Dec-mid Jan.
