Da Tang Noodle House

Da Tang, now in its fourteenth year, is widely recognised as Galway’s most authentic Chinese restaurant, rated highly for quality and value.

The striking red-painted facade is as much part of the local scene as its neighbour across the road, Charlie Byrne’s bookshop.

Du Han To, the personable owner-chef (his own art and calligraphy adorn the walls) has a loyal clientele who return again and again for outstanding noodle, dumpling, stir-fry and rice dishes.

The restaurant itself is simply furnished with glass-topped tables close together, seating no more than thirty and immaculately clean.

The generous noodle dishes are most attractive, prepared to order, and little side salads of sweet-pickled vegetables are served free of charge.

From a range that includes noodles with chicken, beef, prawns and pork, you might choose excellent roast duck in ginger and scallion sauce with noodles (€11.50), the roast duck pieces still tasting crisply roasted, having been added to the noodles, vegetables and stock at the last minute.

Or try a vegetarian option of stir-fried tofu and vegetables with noodles (€10.50). with all vegetable looking and tasting fresh.

This Galway restaurants desserts are limited to a choice of pineapple or banana fritters, but you can finish with very good teas and Lavazza coffee.

Service is attentive and a short, reasonably priced wine list includes some organic bottles, also a choice of Chinese beer and Sake.

Da Tang is a little gem, perfect for a light lunch or more substantial dinner in the low to medium price bracket.

A ‘Lunchbox Take-Out’ features pan fried noodles/rice dishes at €6.50 and noodles in soup for €7.50 and all packaging/cutlery is biodegradable and compostable.

Open from noon daily for lunch and dinner.
