For those who prefer a country house atmosphere, rather than an hotel, the Kent family’s 17th century home on the edge of Waterford city is a haven of peace and tranquillity.
The house is lovely, with classically proportioned reception rooms, and accommodation in four very different rooms which are all thoughtfully, and very comfortably, furnished - but, as peace and relaxation are the aim at Foxmount, don’t expect phones or TVs in bedrooms, or a very early breakfast.
However, Margaret Kent is a great cook and she loves baking, as guests quickly discover when offered afternoon tea in the drawing room - or in the morning, when freshly-baked breads are presented at breakfast.
David and Margaret celebrated forty years in business in 2007 and say they are “delighted to have survived through the era of tax incentives, venture capital, leisure centres & spas, and still have guests coming from all parts of the world to enjoy the homely comforts and experiences of a family run country house on a working farm.”
They are right - it is a very special place and no amount of investment in new developments can recreate what Foxmount, and others like them, do so well.
No evening meals are offered, but the restaurants of Waterford and Cheekpoint are quite close - and guests are welcome to bring their own wine and enjoy a glass at the log fire before going out for dinner.
