It’s all too easy to miss this pleasant family run hotel near Thomond Park as traffic speeds by on the Limerick - Shannon road. Although partially screened by motorway banks, an unpreposessing 1970's exterior has had a recent facelift with softening greenery and tall glass frontage opening onto a welcoming reception area.
Welcoming is the byword here as Daphne Greene is the third generation of the family to head up front of house with friendly staff trained to put customer service at the top of the agenda. Brother Hugh is in charge of the food side of the business, with homely touches like freshly baked cookies served with tea and excellent coffee.
Comfortable bedrooms have recently been refurbished and 16 generously proportioned family rooms are conveniently located on the same level as the leisure centre with 16 metre lane swimming pool and kiddies splash pool.
Attractive public areas lead to conference and banqueting rooms overlooking landscaped grounds and a flower-hung courtyard with splashing fountain that is popular for summer aperitifs as well as wedding photos.
In the spacious Bryan's Cafe Bar and Hugh's on the Green restaurant, emphasis on freshly cooked local produce and delicious home bakes including excellent brown bread and scones. Menus run to popular favourites like Greene's seafood chowder, made-to-order stone baked pizzas and char-grilled steaks served with handcut chunky chips, onion rings and roasted vine tomatoes.
Quality ingredients and good cooking shine through pleasing retro dishes like classic prawn cocktail, smooth duck liver paté and chicken Maryland with banana and pineapple fritters Dessert choices like homemade sherry trifler, fresh fruit pavlova and apple and blackberry crumble provide sweet satisfaction.
The breakfast buffet, includes a wide choice of fresh fruit and compotes, cereals and homemade breads and pastries as well as cooked-to-order treats like fish of the day, eggs Benedict and the traditional full Irish.
