Close by the very tidy village of Keadue and at the heart of a 40-acre estate overlooking Lough Meelagh, you will find this 5* sister establishment to Lough Rynn Castle in Co Leitrim (see entry), and the two properties have much in common, notably very beautiful natural surroundings and a romantic old-world atmosphere.
The original castle has been restored with style in both the public areas and also the accommodation, which is appealing and luxurious.
The Douglas Hyde Restaurant (named after Ireland’s first President, who was born at Castlerea) overlooks the grounds and is both beautifully appointed and intimate – a good combination, especially as early indications are that the standard of food and service matches the surroundings.
When fully complete, the estate will have a spa, walled gardens and grounds designed by Diarmuid Gavin, a 9-hole Nick Faldo golf course and - perhaps the estate’s most unusual feature – a Supercar Museum.
With its romantic setting and luxurious appointments, Kilronan Castle will be a popular wedding venue, and the restoration includes a chapel.
Very reasonably priced special breaks are offered – and may well introduce many new visitors to this fascinating and unspoilt part of the country.
