La Taverna

Unpretentious, cosy and rustic are the words that spring to mind when describing this authentic little Italian restaurant in the centre of Waterford.

On two storeys, it has just four tables on the ground floor (plus another nine upstairs), along with a display cabinet of Italian meats, a wood burning pizza oven a a chef busy making up dishes to order.

Typically Italian, it’s very basic, with lots of wood (wooden floor, bentwood chairs, plain varnished tables, shelving and rafters) wine casks, and wine bottle on walls all contributing to a great atmosphere.

Very prompt reception and a warm Italian welcome get arriving diners off to a good start as they’re whisked off to a table set plainly with paper napkins, good glasses and cutlery, and given the menu and wine list.

At lunchtime you’ll find all the familiar simple dishes - salads, bruschetta, carpaccio, panini, pasta and pizza – and it’s the business: good quality food, correctly cooked and authentically Italian.

You might try a delicious cold dish such as carpaccio of bresaola beef with parmesan and rocket, or a simple hot one like meat balls in tomato sauce and parmesan - or perhaps something from the pizza menu, which includes a very good one where the lovely thin, crisp base is topped with spiced salami, smoked cheese and black olive…And to finish why not share a gorgeous chocolate cake, the perfect partner for an excellent espresso .

The evening menu is much more extensive and very appealing, and you can expect the same fresh, authentic and attractively presented Italian food. very friendly and attentive service from knowledgable staff – and great value.

To accompany, there's a small wine list at lunchtime, all Italian - the evening list is better.

So forget about any small downsides and enjoy this genuinely hospitable little place andits good value - where else might you get such a delicious simple meal for under €50 for two?
