You can’t miss this pretty white cottage pub with its cheerful red paintwork, at Garrykennedy’s charming little harbour. Maura and Cormac Boyle have done a little gentle modernisation since they took over ownership of Larkins in 2006; thankfully, the atmosphere has not changed too much, although there was a change of chef in 2010.
Lunch menus are fairly predictable – homemade soup, seafood chowder, chicken wings and steak sandwich, for example, plus a roast of the day which, on the Guide’s most recent visit, offered a choice of beef or lamb: a hearty country portion of good meat with stuffing, plain vegetables and a brown gravy.
Beef is the backbone of the evening menu, which gears up somewhat to offer a range of Irish Hereford steaks and homemade burgers – and also choices like stuffed pork fillet, honey roast duckling, and cajun chicken kebab, plus two or three fish dishes and something for vegetarians.
Cheerful, friendly service matches the country mood of this attractive pub, which may make a pleasant outing if you are in the area.
