This bright café is an unusual triangular room, with floor to ceiling windows along one side allowing lovely views of Christ Church Cathedral and The Bishops Palace.
Colourful and modern, with food-related photographs seen against lime green walls and simple contemporary furniture and table settings, it makes a nice spot for a snack.
All of the food is produced in the Lemon Tree Café kitchens at Dunmore East (see entry) and delivered fresh each morning; the cooking has a lovely homemade quality and it’s ideal for morning coffee, a light lunch or afternoon tea.
Fresh sandwiches, cakes and other appealing home bakes are the main all day fare on display, but there is also a range of savoury dishes – homemade soup of the day or seafood chowder, for example, quiches and vegetarian options such as a nut & lentil loaf served with house chutney.
The sandwiches served here are far from run of the mill: made with the renowned Hickeys batch bread or the traditional Waterford blaa (a square yeast roll which is unique to the area), they feature local produce including Knockanore and Knockdrinna cheeses, Flanagans smoked salmon and fresh crab mayonnaise.
Desserts are a predictably high point, and the drinks menu includes Java Republic Blue Earth organically produced bean coffee and leaf teas.
Service is very pleasant and the value good: all round, a useful place to know about.
* You can even get marrried at the Theatre Royal - civil ceremonies for up to 120 guests can be held in the vestibule, surrounded by artwork from the Waterford City Municipal Art Collection, and champagne receptions are possible for smaller weddings.
Opening Times Tue- Fri 9.30 -4 .40, Sat 12-4.
