M. J. Henry

The more theme pubs and superpubs there are, the better everyone likes M J Henry’s bar, which hasn’t changed in at least 30 years and, in true country Irish fashion, is also a food store ‘that caters for all your grocery needs’.

A visit to Cootehall (the village of well-known writer the late John McGahern) would be unthinkable without checking on this little gem.

They don’t make them like this any more, alas, but this delightful old pub - complete with formica from the most recent renovation - is a one-off. Get in beside the fire with a hot whiskey and the world will do you no harm.

No bar food, but there is sometimes music.

Closed 25 Dec & Good Fri.
