After a long closure (many wondered if it would ever re-open as an hotel at all), the O'Brien family's hotel down beside the harbour emerged from its crysalis-like redevelopment in recent years just as bright and beautiful as anyone could have wished.
The 'new' Marine is a compact yet very complete complex, with 18 lovely 2- and 3-bedroom self-catering houses in addition to a totally revamped bar, an impressive new first floor restaurant and 11 of the original rooms also refurbished - in the pretty creeper-clad block across the car park.
The family also own The Rectory, and they have always had a reputation for good food and hospitality, so the re-opening of the hotel is a real boost to the village.
Although it has changed so much, the old hotel was not completely demolished and returning guests will find something strangely familiar about it, especially in the stylish new bar which is totally different and yet retains the same friendly atmosphere, and helpful staff.
The bar menu (which is neither extensive nor revealing) offers wholesome fare and the surroundings looking out at the harbour from the circular feature bar, perhaps, or sitting out on the deck are relaxing.
Restaurant:
This fine high-ceilinged first floor room is tiered to take full advantage of the harbour and sea views, and stylishly furnished in warm tones, with comfortable contemporary seating and uncovered wooden tables set up attractively for smart-casual dining.
Proprietor Shane O'Brien is heading up the kitchen team and the aim is to present simple food with a bit of a twist to give a sense of occasion.
Menus are well-balanced but local seafood tops the bill, of course Union Hall smoked mackerel pate with apple & lime salad and toast, perhaps, followed by Glandore Bay fish pie with organic mixed salad - and there's a vegetarian option on both the main menu and a separate children's menu.
Popular desserts to finish include fruit crumbles, chocolate cake, bread & butter pudding or, perhaps, Rosscarbery strawberries in a tuile basket.
An informative wine list is organised by style.
