Mobarnane House

Approached up a stylish gravel drive with well-maintained grass verges, Richard and Sandra Craik-White’s lovely 18th century home has been restored to its former glory and makes a wonderfully spacious retreat for guests: the aim is to provide peace and quiet in great comfort, with very personal attention to detail.

A large, beautifully furnished drawing room has plenty of comfortable seating for everyone when there’s a full house - and the dining room, where Richard’s good country cooking is served (usually at a communal table, although separate tables can be arranged on request), is a lovely room; everything served for dinner is freshly prepared on the day, allowing for any preferences mentioned at the time of booking.

Accommodation is of the same high standard: all rooms have restful country views and comfortable seating (two have separate sitting rooms), quality bedding and everything needed for a relaxing stay, including tea/coffee making facilities, phones and television - and fresh flowers from the garden. Bathrooms vary somewhat (bedrooms without sitting rooms have bigger bathrooms), but all have quality towels and toiletries.

An excellent breakfast gets the day off to a good start - and, as well as being well-placed to explore a large and interesting area blessed with beautiful scenery, fascinating history, local crafts and sports, there is tennis and croquet on site, and lovely lake and woodland walks in the grounds.

Rooms 4 (2 junior suites, 2 superior, all no smoking); B&B €75 pps, ss €30. Not suitable for children under 5 except babies (cot available without charge), children aged 5-10 stay free in parents room. Pets by arrangement. Residents' 4-course D 8pm, €48; advance reservation essential. House wine complimentary. SC discretionary. Closed Nov-Mar. MasterCard, Visa, Laser.

Directions:

From Fethard, take Cashel road for 6km (3.5 m); turn right, signed Ballinure and Thurles; 2.5km (1.5 m) on left.
