Mulcahys Restaurant

If you are ever tired of finding the same old dishes on every menu, just head for Kenmare and refresh your palate at Bruce Mulcahy's original, efficiently run and friendly contemporary restaurant.

A light-filled room is spacious and stylish, with smart modern table settings, funky cutlery and delicious breads on a pretty little bamboo tray. Far from being yet another copy-cat chef playing with world cuisines, Bruce has gone to the source to learn his skills - he learned about fusion food in Thailand, for example, and studied the art of sushi making in Japan; but the secret of this restaurant's great success is that, although many dishes are highly unusual, exciting menus cater for conservative tastes as well as the adventurous palate.

All produce used here is certified organic, and vegetarians get a dish of the day on the blackboard. Dishes especially enjoyed recently include a warm terrine of scallops and prawns with tomato & red pepper puree and an oyster froth, a magical combination and perfectly cooked; inspired cooking is backed up by charming and knowledgeable staff working under Laura Mulcahy's direction - and, judging by the Guide's 2007 visit on a very busy night, any previous problems with service have been resolved.

The early dinner menu is great value - and there's also a magical wine list to match the food.
