Nevins Newfield Inn

Between Mulranny and Newport, beside Newfield Church, you'll find this very pleasant pub, run by local couple John and Anne Nevin. Dating from the mid-1800's, it has been in the Nevin family since 1970.

There is outside seating for fine weather dining, with sea and mountain views, and once inside the bar visitors are struck by the cosy warm feeling created by generous use of timber and the big open fireplace with a real turf fire - a feeling underlined by the cheerful, friendly welcome of the staff.

The bar is in several sections - the inner one is a bright and attractively decorated area with a handsome long bar; it is divided into open booths in the traditional style, and has plenty of atmosphere. Black and white photographs of locals from another generation in the front area will no doubt bring back memories to returning natives.

Expect traditional food, with the various menus on offer including something for everyone - there’s a breakfast menu, all day light bites, daily specials, an à la carte, a pizza menu and one for the children.

The hearty portions will please visitors on activity breaks in the area - the recently completed Newport-Mulranny section of Great Western Greenway is nearby, making Nevins a handy destination for walkers and cyclists.

If you order fish and chips, for example, expect two large pieces of fresh white fish, moist and well-cooked, served with home-cut chips, home-made tartare sauce and side salads (around €14.50). Mussels, Clew Bay oysters, salmon, a couple of pasta dishes, steaks, chicken and a west of Ireland mixed grill are among the many dishes featured, and all at very reasonable prices. (Starters about €4-7, main courses around €12 -22 and desserts about €5.50.)

There is a full bar of course, also a wine list offering 25 moderately priced wines, with half a dozen 1/4 bottles (€5.25) and five by the glass. House wine €17.

While Nevins is known for the wholesome, generous fare served throughout the day, the real USP is genuine hospitality – nothing is ever too much trouble here, and every visitor is truly welcome.
