The O’Malley brothers, who have earned a special reputation for their great cooking have taken on a new challenge at Bay View which occupies a very prominent position on the pier.
As you approach by boat you’ll see the large two-storey white building, with wooden benches on the terrace. Now totally refurbished, it has been converted to make a smart modern wine and tapas bar.
There are three golden painted rooms with original coving and high ceilings, including a bright mirror-backed wine bar in the first room; paintings adorning the walls are for sale at the time of our visit, shortly after the restaurant opened in 2007, the large and beautiful works were by local artists Cyril and Finuala Flaherty, and Jackie Rowantree.
The main food offering is tapas (calamari with sweet chilli sauce for example, and prosciutto roll, stuffed with rocket and cottage cheese, pizzas and gourmet burgers and wine by the bottle or glass (6) - but a full Irish breakfast is served till 5pm, and main courses include pan-fried mackerel with chorizo and potato salad, or Moroccan tagine with cinnamon and coriander couscous.
Desserts like baked raspberry cheesecake with raspberry purée or chocolate tarte and rhubarb compôte alone should tempt the hundreds of day trippers to sample the food of these two passionate well travelled and brilliant cooks.
