O'Neills - The Point Bar

In the same family for 150 years, Michael and Bridie O'Neill's pub, The Point Bar, is beside the Valentia Island car ferry.

Renovated in true character by the present owners, it's always neat and makes an appealing place to drop into for a quick one while you're waiting for the ferry, if it happens to be open when passing - but even better to stay awhile and make the most of their super fresh seafood, served during the summer.

The menu comprises entirely of fish and seafood, all spanking fresh - no meat or vegetarian dishes, and no desserts. Although not offering seafood chowder (or bisque), it's otherwise a delight for fish lovers, covering everything from a whole range of salads and open sandwiches on excellent brown bread - fresh and locally smoked salmon (wild, if available), smoked mackerel, crabmeat, crab claws - to hot dishes, like deep-fried squid and a couple of hake and monkfish dishes with garlic and olive oil.

It's a simple place, but immaculately clean and with a great friendly atmosphere - and the secret of its success is simple food based on top quality ingredients. It's worth a journey here for the magnificent crabmeat alone and is extremely popular locally, despite the no reservations and no credit cards policy.

Service, by the owners, is friendly and efficient, and there's a short wine list, mostly whites.

Not very suitable for children.

The Valentia Island ferry runs continuously - i.e. not to a time table - from April to September inclusive.

: Food available only from April to October: L Mon-Sat, D daily. Closed L Sun.(It is always advisable to phone ahead to check food service, especially off season).
