Papaya
One square room in a basement in Ely Place, Papya has a vaulted ceiling that lends character, to an elegant carpeted space with linen clad tables, soothing creamy tones and a sprinkling of Asian decorations. Welcoming staff swiftly offer menus that are quite extensive but clearly laid out by course and style - the great Thai signature dishes are there, of course (the green, red and yellow curries are highlighted on the menu) but there are plenty of lesser known dishes to choose from too, and - with the exception of special ingredients like sea bass - most main courses are under EUR20. A Papaya Platter starter (EUR14 for two) is a good choice on a first visit, giving a selection of five appetisers to nibble on while familiarising yourself with the rest of the menu, which includes a good choice of seafood, and a separate vegetarian section. A pleasant, calm atmosphere, tasty food with well-balanced flavours and a reasonable bill all add up to satisfied customers - this is a restaurant that deserves to be better known.
