Polke's

This lovely old general merchants and traditional pub is just across the road from Mary’s Bakery, and well worth a visit. It was established in 1820 and has remained in the family since then - the present proprietor, Brian Polke, has had responsibility for this national treasure since 1962.

Not much has changed it seems: the long, narrow bar behind the shop is completely unspoilt, friendly and a joy to find yourself in. The whole place is immaculate too (including the outside loo in a whitewashed yard at the back), giving the lie to the widely-held view that “character” pubs are, by definition, scruffy.

A nice touch of modernity which reflects the close-knit nature of the local community is the collection of pictures donated by artists from the nearby Ballinglen Arts Centre, which are exhibited in the bar and make a fascinating talking point for new arrivals.

Open 10.30am-11.30pm. Closed 25 Dec & Good Fri.
