Quay Cottage Restaurant
TEMPORARILY CLOSED - PLEASE CALL THE RESTAURANT TO GET LATEST INFORMATION
Kirstin and Peter MacDonagh have been running this charming stone quayside restaurant just outside Westport since 1984, and it never fails to delight. It's cosy and informal, with scrubbed pine tables and an appropriate maritime decor, which is also reflected in the menu (although there is also much else of interest, including steaks, honey roast duckling and imaginative vegetarian options).
But seafood is the star, typically in starters of chowder or garlic grilled oysters and main courses baked fillet of tandoori salmon, served with raita dressing - or bake cod fillet with a pesto & smoked mozzarella crust and tangy lime & champagne sauce.
Daily specials are often especially interesting (langoustine, halibut, scallops, lobster for example) and there are nice homely desserts, like rhubarb pie with real custard or a plated farmhouse cheese selection such as Cashel Blue, smoked Gubbeen and an Irish brie, with fresh fruit and biscuits. Freshly-brewed coffee by the cup to finish.
There's a great atmosphere in this immaculately maintained restaurant, and Kirstin supervises a friendly front of house team.
A fairly priced, well-chosen wine list is informative and includes a number of wines available by the bottle or half bottle.
