Radisson Blu Hotel Athlone

Magnificently located right on the river and bang in the middle of Athlone town, this hotel has impressive public areas and great style: an expansive foyer leads off to an informal split-level restaurant one side, conference and meeting rooms on the other - and opens out on to a huge riverside deck; overlooking the marina and set up with teak furniture, umbrellas and patio heaters, this is a great asset to a town centre hotel.

The usual Radisson attributes of contemporary chic and eco-awareness apply throughout the hotel, and also a choice of room styles - Urban if you like warm tones, Ocean if you prefer a cooler, watery theme; all rooms have excellent facilities, including mini-bar, hospitality tray and broadband internet access - and some have great views of the River Shannon and the town.

Athlone has character and is well-placed to explore an interesting area that deserves to be better known; for those who like a town centre location this would be hard to beat as a short break destination.

Conference/banqueting (600/380); business centre, secretarial services, free broadband wi/fi, laptop sized safe in bedrooms. Rooms 124 (8 junior suites, 4 executive, 11 family suites, 7 disabled); B&B from €105 pps (various packages and offers available). Children welcome (1 x under 16 free in parents' room, cots available free of charge, baby sitting arranged, playroom). No pets. Lift. 24 hr room service. Meals available all day. Synergie health & leisure club on site (16.5m pool). Golf nearby (golf breaks offered). Open all year. abbreviations
