Ross House
In mature grounds on the shores of Lough Sheelin, Peter and Ursula Harkort's characterful old house enjoys an excellent location and offers a good standard of accommodation at a modest price.
Bedrooms, which are distinctly continental in style, have telephone, TV and tea/coffee trays and some unusual features: three have their own conservatories, four have fireplaces (help yourself to logs from the shed) and most have continental style showers.
Peace and relaxation are the great attraction, and there's a fine choice of activities at hand: a pier offers boats (and engines) for fishermen to explore the lake, there's safe bathing from a sandy beach, and also tennis.
Ross House is also an equestrian centre, with all facilities including riding lessons, cross country riding, shows and breeding, outdoor arena and warm-up area and the most recent addition, completed in 2008, a very large indoor arena (60 x 40m).
Ulla cooks for everyone, making packed lunches, sandwiches, high tea and a 4-course dinner (€22; wine list from about €11).
Rooms 6 (all en-suite & shower only); children welcome (playground, cot available, €5); pets permitted. B&B €38 pps, ss €10. SC discretionary. Equestrian, fishing (fly fishing & Coarse), tennis. Open all year. MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
