A good meal will add greatly to your enjoyment of a visit to this traditional holiday town of Newcastle on the sea edge of the Mountains of Mourne, so make a point of seeking out this unusual and rather special seafront restaurant.
Sea Salt has recently found renewed energy under proprietor Aidan Small, who is unperturbed by vagaries of the Irish summer weather, as loyal regulars continue to support his honest venture.
Having reduced the number of choices to focus more on quality and local produce, Aidan has concentrated on offering simple quality dishes cooked with flair and an attention to flavour: certain menu items feature an “FU” symbol, which means ‘flavours unleashed’ and applies to particularly tasty dishes.
On Friday and Saturday, as well as being open all day, they do a Tapas evening to 9.30-10pm; other theme nights are held too, eg World Cuisine.
Aidan is very passionate about what he is doing and the shelves are packed with interesting deli goods, many produced locally - and, although they are competing with an ice cream parlour on one side and chip shop/café on the other, an interested middle market, seeking quality, continues to find them here.
