The cheerful frontage of this popular daytime café and evening bistro would be hard to miss. It’s a younger sister of the well-established Kilkenny city favourite of the same name (see Cafe Sol Restaurant), and you will find the same winning format here: attractive, relaxed surroundings and well executed modern cooking based on well-sourced ingredients.
Menus offer a well balanced choice that will probably include the good beef that the Kilkenny area is known for (a char-grilled rib-eye steak perhaps, served with seasonal accompaniments) and their local produce and suppliers are proudly credited – including Goatsbridge Trout and Knockdrinna cheeses, which are both produced nearby.
Special menus at lunch and dinner (from about €9.95 and €23.95 respectively) offer especially good value, but keen pricing is not achieved at the expense of quality or freshness; everything possible is homemade, including desserts – fans have been known to travel here for the chocolate fondant alone...
Offering good food and service, an atmospheric setting and good value, Sol is a real asset to Thomastown and a boon to visitors staying in the area – evening reservations are recommended.
