Sweeney's Public House & Wine Bar
Seymour Sweeney’s bar is in an attractive stone building on the sea side of the road as you drive into Portballintrae, and is very handy to both the Royal Portrush Golf Club and the Giant’s Causeway.
Formerly a coaching stable for the Leslie estate, it is one of the oldest surviving domestic buildings in the village and listed as being of architectural and historic significance.
Now restored to capture its former character it’s a pleasant place, with a welcoming open fire in the bar and a choice of places to drink or have a bite to eat.
Unpretentious food is in the modern international café/bar style; the lunchtime offering is casual fare – steak sandwich, chicken Caesar, steak & Guinness pie, panini etc –and a roast lunch is available on Sunday in addition to the normal menu.
On the evening menu you’ll find steak and chicken dishes, also rack of Irish lamb on colcannon, some fish (typically grilled plaice or salmon and battered cod) and a couple of vegetarian dishes.
Although likely to suit all age groups during the day, it can get very busy during the evening, especially on live music nights (folk & country; there is a late licence to 1 am on Friday and Saturday).
A useful place to break a day exploring the area, although a phone call is advised.
Seats 120 (+50 outside, +32 private room); children welcome, wheelchair accessible; air conditioning. L & D daily, 12-3pm & 5-9pm (to 8.30pm Sun); A la carte. Closed 25 Dec. Amex, Diners, MasterCard, Visa, Switch.
Directions:
Centre of village overlooking bay & harbour.
