Tong Dynasty

This new restaurant in the university area might not win any stars for decor, but it's clean and bright, with windows on two sides and has a lovely wooden floor, and neat white-clothed tables with simple paper overlays. And, in a city where good Chinese food is already well respected, it has received a warm welcome for its authenticity. Pleasant staff wearing mandarin collared red embroidered tops are welcoming, serving a cup of china tea to arriving guests - and the sight of happy diners from the local Chinese community is always a good sign. At first sight menus look like fairly standard fare, but there's also a blackboard giving the chef's specials in Chinese characters - and, if you want to get the most from this kitchen, ask for the Chinese menu, which offers dishes not usually found on regular menus - which are organised in the usual western way, and inevitably blanded down to suit local tastes.
