Barrow River Arts Festival - Co Carlow

Friday 2nd - Sunday 4th March 2012


Founded and curated by long time Irish residents, Swiss violinist Maya Homburger and English bass player Barry Guy, the Barrow River Arts Festival presents, in one packed weekend, a programme of classical  music, free improvised jazz, theatre, story telling and visual art in two  beautiful settings along the River Barrow in counties Kilkenny and  Carlow, Duiske Abbey and Borris House.

Friday 2nd March - Duiske Abbey, Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny
8pm - Katia and Marielle Labèque

For many years Katia and Marielle Labèque have formed one of the most widely recognised and popular piano duos on the international scene. For the opening gala concert they will perform works by Debussy, Stravinsky and Gershwin in the magnificent setting of the 13th century Duiske Abbey. Tickets:€30/€25 (concession)

Saturday 3rd March - Borris House, Borris, Co. Carlow
2pm - Opening of Albert Irvin Exhibition

An exhibition celebrating the 90th birthday of the English Abstract Expressionist painter Albert Irvin, with solo improvisations from Evan Parker on Saxophone (UK).

4.30pm - Calmus Ensemble (Germany) - Sacred and Profane
Superb à capella singing of music for five voices by Schütz, Bach, Franke, Monteverdi and Mateo Fletcha by the Leipzig based Calmus Ensemble. Sponsored by the Goethe Institute.

8.30pm - The AURORA Trio (Spain & UK) - Compositions and Improvisation

Agustí Fernández - piano, Barry Guy - bass, Ramon Lopez - percussion
The works performed by the duo of Agustí Fernández and Barry Guy at last year’s festival were described by Michael Dervan in the Irish Times as ‘a sequence of numbers that ranged from riotous and manic to the sheerly soulful’. As they are being joined for this year’s festival by the sensational percussionist Ramon Lopez you can expect to be blown away!

Sunday 4th March - Borris House, Borris, Co. Carlow

2.30pm - Irish Story Telling with Eddie Lenihan

If you have no magic in your life, you’re in a sad place - so says leading Irish story-teller Eddie Lenihan who has been at the forefront of story telling and collecting in Ireland for the last twenty years.

4.30pm - Women in Joyce and Beckett
Marcella Riordan, well known for her portrayal of Molly Bloom on the award winning Naxos audio book of Joyce's Ulysses, performs passages from Molly's soliloquy and from Samuel Beckett's play Happy Days. Introduced by Roger Marsh.

7pm - Calmus Ensemble - Camerata Kilkenny
Leading international early music ensemble, Camerata Kilkenny, is joined by soprano Anja Lipfert and her colleagues from the Calmus Ensemble for the grand finale of the second Barrow River Arts Festival.

There will be an opportunity to meet the artists at a Tapas Supper in Borris House at 6.30pm Saturday
