Barryscourt castle is the 16th century seat of the Barry family

Barryscourt Castle

The site on which Barryscourt castle now stands has been occupied for over a thousand years - there is evidence of a wooden watermill having been built next to a stream at the site sometime in the 7th century, long before any fortification existed there.

However Barryscourt castle is the 16th century seat of the Barry family and the Barryscourt Trust was set up in 1987 for the purpose of conserving and developing the potential of the castle as a heritage site. In the 1990s, the relatively intact shell of the tower house was repaired and re-roofed and is a fine example of an Irish tower house.

Both the First floor Main Hall and the Second Floor Great Hall have been extensively restored and is as it would have been in the 16th century. The Orchard has been restored to an original 16th century design and the herb garden has been reinstated too.
