Maghera

Co. Londonderry

Located at the foot of the Glenshane Pass, this small village with narrow streets has a is home to a 10th Century church built on the site of a 6th Century monastery.  The old church includes a 12th Century door with a crucifixion scene carved on the large lintel.

Local places of interest to visitors include the Tirkane Sweat House (0044 28 71 267 284), which is an early type of sauna used in the 18th and 19th Centuries and only a few remain in Ireland.

The memory of the local traditional linen is kept alive with factory tours around the William Clark and Sons linen factory (0044 28 79 547 200), which takes in a dam which used to power the old linen mill.

Knockcloghrim Windmill is a local point of interest, which is now fully restored and was in operation until 1895 when strong winds blew the sails off.  The interior houses local history exhibits and a viewing gallery.
