Temple House

One of Ireland’s most unspoilt old houses, this is a Georgian mansion on 1,200 acres of farm and woodland, overlooking the original lakeside castle which was built by the Knights Templar in 1200 A.D.

Civil Ceremonies or blessings are possible here, and there are several churches to choose from nearby; both the house and gardens present endless opportunities for photographs. The wedding party takes over the guest rooms and grounds for two days and the wedding venues hire charge includes 2 nights bed and breakfast and one dinner for 14 guests; there are terraced gardens and miles of woodland walks, and the wedding party may also explore the lake in a rowing boat and fish for pike.

If it is part of your plan, your civil ceremony has to be held under a fixed roof Monday-Friday; usually about 3.30pm so that it runs nicely into the reception timings. The Percevals like to hold it in an old billiard room which has a wonderful skylight. Alternatively, a humanist ceremony can also be held on a Saturday at the lakeside castle, in the garden or, if the weather is inclement, in the house. Space and flexibility is easy. There is no additional charge for the ceremony.

The initial reception with bubbly and canapés is held in the vestibule, morning room and terraced gardens. Staff discreetly offer canapés and top up glasses for your guests. The speeches are often held in the garden, overlooking the castle and lake, or in the vestibule from the grand staircase. The groom can then relax and enjoy the meal! It also means that should your numbers exceed 100, which is the capacity of the main dining room, another 40 guests can overflow with ease into the small (relatively speaking) dining room.

The billiard room wing is where the band set up and you can dance the night away. It ensures that there is an easy flow to the whole day, keeping it fresh and fun for your party. Fun is a key word here.

You must take the house the day before your wedding so that you, your friends and family can settle in, decorate and relax into the special atmosphere here. The venue means the whole house, gardens, lake and miles of walks around the estate. You might also consider having a survivors’ party on day 3.

There is an optional self catering cottage on the estate that sleeps 8 and is good value. For guests unable to stay on the estate it is only a 20-minute shuttle to hotels in Sligo or Ballymote.

A beautiful house in a wonderful setting.
