2009 Award Winners HIDEAWAY OF THE YEAR 2009

Carrig House Country House & Restaurant

Failte IrelandDozens of interesting places hidden around Ireland come under the microscope when we’re considering this much sought-after award, and we’re happy to report that this country is very well endowed with well-run characterful places off the beaten track that please the many visitors who are looking for interesting and restful alternatives to the standard hotel offering.

But few would have the natural advantages of this lovely place - beautifully situated with panoramic views across Caragh Lake to the Magillicuddy Reeks Lake, it is a very attractive house handsomely set in fine gardens with the lake and mountains providing a dramatic backdrop.

Better still, it’s welcoming and comfortable, with owners Frank and Mary Slattery heading up a team of friendly staff, and a relaxed atmosphere – it’s a place where you can lose yourself for hours with a book, beside the fire in one of the charming sitting rooms, playing chess, cards or board games in the games room, or boating out on the lake.

And then there’s John Luke’s superb food served in the Lakeside Restaurant (open to non-residents)…a real treat – making this a very special hideaway indeed.
