Bahay Kubo

Don’t be put off by trains rumbling overhead as you approach this unusual Filipino restaurant - once you get upstairs past the rather worn carpeted entrance and stairway, you will find yourself in a spacious loft room.

Friendly staff seat new guests immediately and bring iced water with menus that are well organised with explanations about the Filipino dishes. Several set menus are offered and an à la carte which is, by oriental standards, quite restrained; anyone who likes Chinese food should enjoy the Filipino versions, the fare here is very similar and offers good value for money.

As in some other oriental cuisines, the weakness is in the dessert menu, so make the most of the excellent savoury dishes instead.

The real selling point of this restaurant is the nightly live music by ‘Manila Rhythm’, a talented three piece of guitars and double bass performing a wide variety of music from Cuban songs to Frank Sinatra. The resulting atmosphere makes the restaurant ideal for larger groups seeking an informal night out for reasonable prices.

Service is attentive, making up in willingness anything it may occasionally lack in training.

Seats 80' reservations required. D Tue-Sat, 6-11 (Sun 5-10), L Thu & Fri, 12-2.30. Set Menu from about €29, also a la carte Live music Thu & Sat. Closed Mon Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
