This younger sister of  The Port House on South William Street follows the familiar formula of simple, well cooked hearty tapas served in atmospheric surroundings, with lashings of Spanish and Portuguese wine.

Large streetside windows draped in tall curtains give an air of intrigue to the passer by; on entering you are greeted by a lively buzz and character a-plenty.

Exposed brick walls, white sanded wooden floors and rack upon rack of wine bottles set the tone, whilst the open kitchen and impressive wine bar provide the action.

A classy worn feel is provided in old wooden leather covered chairs and shiny black tables, with the ground floor room providing a brighter dining experience than the cellar room, which offers a more intimate, candlelit ambience.

Friendly staff are quick to seat customers and provide a menu of around two dozen dishes divided into hot and cold plates of tapas, in the Spanish and Basque style.

You'll find the familiar dishes of patatas bravas, calamari, tortilla and paella, but there is also something for the more adventurous such as Galician octopus or seared foie gras.

This Dublin restaurants food is simple and uncomplicated with big flavours, served in a smart cheerful style, for very acceptable prices.

An extensive exclusively Spanish and Portuguese wine list includes an interesting selection of sherries. Some bottles are available by the carafe or glass, and a nice touch is to offer bottles being sold at a lower off licence price for those who want to take something home.

Spanish and Basque beers are also offered, and an outdoor terrace opening onto Meeting House Square now gives an even more continental atmosphere in fine weather.

Seats 120 (private room, 30; outdoors, 30); open daily 11am-11pm; children welcome before 9pm; no reservations taken; free broadband wi/fi; air conditioning. SC discretionary. Closed 25 Dec. MasterCard, Visa, Laser
