Becketts Bar & Restaurant

A well maintained garden with plenty of seating make a good impression on arrival at this large pub on the outskirts of Waterford city; inside it is big and airy - the décor is very simple, with some black and white photos and quotations from Irish authors on the walls, and high tables with tall chairs and minimal pub style place settings (knife and fork in a paper napkin).

Pleasant staff make you feel very welcome and immediately offer menus which, with about a dozen main courses, are perhaps too long for the kitchen to handle well; however there is also a set menu with a very short choice (about €12.50 for main courses) which is great value for a family tea and, on the à la carte, it is a pleasant surprise to find a dish like lamb’s liver and lambs kidneys as a starter, also a huge bowl of mussels in tomato & scallion sauce.

Main courses include staples like cod in beer batter with mushy peas and pasta dishes and, although perhaps less successful than the starters, prices are very reasonable and, with very good staff and pleasing surroundings, this is a useful place to know about.

Food served daily 12.30-9.30pm (to 8.30pm Sun). House wine €19.95. Toilets wheelchair accessible. Children welcome (high chair, childrens menu, baby changing facilities). Closed 25 Dec, Good Fri. Visa, Laser.
