Cargoes Café

Established in 1993 by Radha Patterson, this very special little delicatessen and café has always had a great reputation and, although it changed hands in 2011, many of the staff stayed on and standards have been maintained.

New owner Stephen Rogan clearly shares the philosophy that made Cargoes a much-loved destination for food lovers - fine produce for the delicatessen side of the business is meticulously sourced, and the same principles apply to the food served in the café.

Breakfast is a big deal at Cargoes, served until noon on weekdays and all day on Sundays. A wide menu offers everything from the traditional full fry (there's even a slimmer's version) to pancakes, and there's always a good choice of home bakes including scones, tray bakes and delicious homemade desserts to enjoy with a cup of tea or a good coffee  - made with Segafredo beans, it's something they take particular pride in.

Lunchtime brings daily hot specials along with a range of wholesome soups, made to order sandwiches panini and, on weekend evenings, things gear up when their Bistro menu comes on stream.

Cleverly organised as a short à la carte from which some dishes maybe selected to make up the extremely reasonably priced early dinner menu, the Bistro menu offers an appealing choice of upbeat classics - chicken liver pate comes with balsamic onion chutney and toasted ciabatta, for example, and pan fried cod may be dressed up with a herb veloute and seasonal garnishes such as asparagus and spinach mash - and you can even finish off with a very Northern Irish speciality, Yellowman cheesecake.

The staff at Cargoes have always been very nice and friendly, and owner Stephen Rogan is very hands-on front of house, which is going down a treat with fans of this great little place.
