Cromane Mussels

The pure clean waters of Castlemaine Bay are the source of the area’s famous and very natural product, Cromane mussels. One of the largest natural mussel beds in Ireland is in Castlemaine Bay, and it's a product that local hotels and restaurants are proud to champion.


Although cultured, they are generally known as wild mussels, as they are simply dredged when young and the 'spats' are transferred to a more favourable location where nutrient-rich water allows them to grow to maturity in a natural environment.
