Ely HQ
This, the third and most recent of Erik and Michelle Robson's wine bar/cafés, is south of the river in the new Hanover Quay area of the city, which is nearing completion. On a corner site, it's an angular premises with huge windows and, with hard lines, drum lamp shades, canteen style tables and (a few) large flower motifs on soft furnishings, there's a slightly retro-60s side to the décor.
It has a young, stylish feel to it, a strong cocktail menu, the great wine list that has become the trademark of the Ely group, and large eating areas on two levels, ground floor and downstairs.
Smartly presented menus offer a choice of about a dozen starters and main courses, with the familiar emphasis on well-sourced ingredients but with a rather more sophisticated tone and higher prices than the other Ely menus.
Good service is a strong point and this looks set to be a real winner in this fast-maturing and attractive area of the city.
