Gatchell's Restaurant
If you intend visiting the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre it could be useful to know that a tasty bite to eat can be part of the plan.
Well-known Waterford restaurateur, Paula Prendiville, runs this pleasant all-day restaurant at the centre - and don't be put off by the fact that it's self-service, as Paula cooks interesting, wholesome fare based on local produce, albeit with some international themes (and, due to the high turnover, a few dishes may sometimes be bought in).
Irish potato & coriander soup, prawn pasta & pineapple salad and fresh salmon salad are all typical home-cooked fare - and visitors who despair of ever finding traditional Irish food in the current tidal wave of global cooking will be pleased to see dishes with a respect for tradition here, such as Murphys Irish beef, Irish stew and ham, pea & potato pie.
It's all good value, and light bites are very inexpensive - tea or coffee with a piece of lemon slice, for example.
Seats 160. Children welcome. Toilets wheelchair accessible. Open daily 9-5.30 (Sun 9-5). A la carte (average main course about €9). House wine about €12. Closed 21 Dec-2 Jan.
