John R Dowey

Established in 1936, this third generation family butchers and deli is now run by John Dowey and his son Simon. They offer a successful balance of tradition and innovation - and have plenty of accolades to prove it.

Known especially for traditional cuts of beef and prize winning sausages, they make all their own butchery products and sell carefully selected deli products and speciality foods.

These include great ice cream - they have teamed up with wtih Glastry Farm Ice Cream, which is made at Kircubbin on the Ards Peninsula (and sampled approvingly by H.R.H. Prince Charles on a visit to nearby Mount Stewart House & Gardens).

In 2009, the Doweys opened a coffee shop next door to their deli and it has proved a great success. Their teas and coffees have been carefully selected from local suppliers and are available to purchase (leaf tea and beans/ground respectively) and, in addition to freshly baked scones, pastries and desserts they have an unusual speciality in their own homemade shortbread, made to an old family recipe.

A light lunch menu includes soups and stews, baked potatoes, pies and sausage rolls along with a wide range of sandwiches, and there's also a range of ready meals which changes daily.

How the family butcher has changed in recent years!

Open Mon-Sat 8.30-5.30, Thu to 8.30. (Coffee shop closes 5pm). Closed Sun. abbreviations
