Kilronan Castle

Close by the very tidy village of Keadue and at the heart of a 40-acre estate overlooking Lough Meelagh, you will find this 5* sister establishment to Lough Rynn Castle in Co Leitrim (see entry), and the two properties have much in common, notably very beautiful natural surroundings and a romantic old-world atmosphere.

The original castle has been restored with style in both the public areas and also the accommodation, which is appealing and luxurious. The hotel's Leisure Club and Elemis Spa are attractions, especially for weddings and short breaks.

When fully complete, the estate will have walled gardens and grounds designed by Diarmuid Gavin, a 9-hole Nick Faldo golf course and - perhaps the estate’s most unusual feature – a Supercar Museum.

Its romantic setting and luxurious appointments make Kilronan Castle a popular wedding venue.

The Douglas Hyde Restaurant (named after Ireland’s first President, who was born at Castlerea) overlooks the grounds and is both beautifully appointed and intimate – a good combination, especially as the standard of food and service generally matches the surroundings, making this an appealing destination for a special occasion.

Very reasonably priced special breaks are offered – and may well introduce many new visitors to this fascinating and unspoilt part of the country.

Conferences/Banqueting (400/320); business centre. Rooms 84 (3 junior suites, 6 family, 4 disabled, all no smoking); B&B €50-150 pps; single €80. children welcome (baby sitting arranged; cots); limited room service; lift; no dogs. Spa (jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, beauty salon, treatments, massage), swimming pool, walking, gardens. Open all year. Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Laser. abbreviations
