Montys of Kathmandu

Shiva Gautham's modest-looking restaurant opposite the Irish Film Centre is the only one in Ireland to specialise in Nepalese cuisine, and the food here is invariably very enjoyable - at agreeably moderate prices.

The chefs are all from Nepal and although all the familiar Indian styles are represented- tandoori, curry etc - the emphasis is on Nepalese specialities and varying standard dishes by, for example, using Himalayan spices. The menu is quite extensive and includes a platter of assorted starters which is a good choice for a group of four, allowing time to consider the rest of the menu without rushing; there's also a fair selection of vegetarian dishes, including a traditional Nepali mixed vegetable curry which can be served mild, medium or hot.

Friendly and exceptionally helpful staff are perhaps the most outstanding feature of the restaurant service throughout is gently attentive and staff are happy to offer suggestions, or to choose a well balanced meal for you, including specialities like Kachela (a starter of raw minced lamb with garlic, ginger, herbs and spices which is said to be a favourite amongst the Newars in Kathmandu, served with a shot of whiskey) and Momo - these Nepalese dumplings served with a special chutney require 24 hours notice and are 'the most popular dish in Kathmandu'.

But you will also find sound renditions of old favourites here, including Chicken Tika Masala: moist pieces of tender boneless chicken cooked in the tandoori, and served in a creamy masala sauce.

This can be a really rewarding restaurant and, in addition to an extensive wine list (organised by price) and drinks menu, they even have their own beer, 'Shiva', brewed exclusively for the restaurant.

Seats 60 (private room, 30); children welcome. L Mon-Sat, 12-2; Set L about €20; D daily 6-11.30pm, (Sun to 10.30), Tasting Menu about €50. L&D á la carte available. SC 12.5% on groups 6+. House wine from €18. Closed L Sun, 25-26 Dec, 1 Jan & Good Fri. Amex, MasterCard, Visa, Laser.
