Oz-Haven Restaurant

This well-known restaurant has re-located from Oysterhaven to the premises formerly occupied by Jean-Marc Tsai and Jacqui St John-Jones’ popular restaurant Le Bistro, in the centre of Kinsale.

The lively revamped premises feature cartoon prints on the walls, chandeliers and simple bistro tables – and a large fish tank just inside the door. Predictably quirky menus offer the expected oddities (crocodile balls) and are strewn with comments that could be irritating; but underneath the baloney there’s a good selection of dishes offered and – despite the Australian exotics – ingredients are good quality, mostly sourced locally, and organic where possible.

In the Guide’s experience the cooking is good and food attractively presented, which – together with good service from professional staff, and attractive surroundings – makes for good value, although prices are quite high.

The wine list offers reasonably priced house wines, and ten wines by the glass, otherwise prices rise rather steeply.

*NB* Oz-haven now do B.Y.O. (bring your own wine) and in case their customers forget to avail of this, they have the local off license list of some of the most popular reds and whites showing 'their' prices, they then offer to run around and get their selection for them, there of course is a corkage of €8, but it still gives a cheaper overall bill in the end!
